SOS! HEAT SCHOOLS

Dear Greta:

Before I tell you why we wrote to you, we want to thank you for being so brave and starting this fight in defense of our planet. Thank you for drawing the attention of politicians and the powerful to the fact that time is running out and drastic measures must be taken to halt and reverse the climate emergency in which we find ourselves.

We wrote to you from Andalusia, it’s in the south of Spain. Here it is very hot and every time it arrives before, almost mid-April, and it leaves later, end of October. But despite being a very hot region, public schools have never had measures to relieve the heat. Our children are warm in their schools, they are as hot as 35 degrees Celsius, and so they cannot learn or do the usual school chores.

Many families have struggled to change these conditions and two years ago we joined in a movement called "Heat Schools". We managed to get a political group to bring to Parliament a bioclimatization law that makes schools green and healthy spaces, with trees in playgrounds, more energy efficiency, and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint. But the Andalusian government does not intend to pass the law like this, but to change it so that it is not useful to the planet. It is an opportunity for our schoolchildren and an obligation for politicians, but they do not want to.

Querida Greta:

Antes de contarte por qué te escribimos, queremos agradecerte que hayas sido tan valiente y hayas empezado esta lucha en defensa de nuestro planeta. Gracias por llamar la atención de los políticos y de los poderosos sobre que se acaba el tiempo y hay que tomar medidas drásticas para frenar y revertir la situación de emergencia climática en que nos encontramos.

Te escribimos desde Andalucía, está en el sur de España. Aquí hace mucho calor y cada vez llega antes, casi mediados de abril, y se va más tarde, finales de octubre. Pero a pesar de ser una región siempre muy calurosa, los colegios públicos nunca han tenido medidas que alivien el calor. Nuestros niños y niñas pasan calor en sus colegios, llegan a estar a 35 grados centígrados, y así no pueden aprender ni hacer las tareas escolares habituales.

Muchas familias hemos luchado para cambiar estas condiciones y hace dos años nos unimos en un movimiento llamado “Escuelas de Calor”. Hemos conseguido que un grupo político llevase al Parlamento una ley de bioclimatización que haga de los colegios espacios verdes y sanos, con árboles en los patios de recreo, más eficiencia energética, energías renovables y contribuir a reducir la huella de carbono. Pero el gobierno andaluz no tiene intención de aprobar la ley así, sino cambiándola para que no sea útil al planeta. Es una oportunidad para nuestros escolares y una obligación para los políticos, pero no quieren.
